Honey locust
This tree can reach 25 meters in height and can live for more than 100 years. Flowers are produced in June and these are appreciated by bees. After flowering, the appearance of pods bearing seeds similar to beans will follow.
Honey locust is an ideal tree to use as a windbreak hedge. It particularly appreciates exposure to the sun, rich and humid soils.
The first years after planting, the shrubs should be protected by mulching or a winter veil.
The seeds can be stored in a cool, dry place for several years and they tolerate freezing (-20°C).
Start sowing
Allow 24 hours for seed treatment;
Perform seed stratification, either mechanically or thermally.
- Mechanical scarification : Pierce or sand the integument (shell) of the seeds, in order to slightly expose the albumen (inside). Soak the seeds in room temperature water for 24 hours. The latter should swell if the mechanical scarification has been carried out.
WHERE
-Thermal scarification : Soak the seeds in freshly boiled water (but no longer boiling). Then let the water containing the seeds cool for 24 hours. The seeds should have swollen from their original size. Repeat this step for seeds that have not changed in size.
Notes : The integument (shell) of this seed is hard and impermeable; this is why it is important to damage it slightly in order to allow water to penetrate into the seed for germination to take place.
Sowing: Lightly dry the seeds. Sow them on the flat side. Bury them less than five millimeters from the surface in the seedling pot. Transplant into soil and mulch.
