Astilbe forms sturdy clumps from which spring flower stalks composed of tiny flowers gathered in panicles that resemble large feathers. These wispy flowers are very decorative.
Even after flowering, the flowers retain a beautiful appearance. Flowering occurs from June to August.
Once your plants are well established, you can take flower stems to make bouquets.
Astilbe requires moist but well-draining soil. You can put a good mulch at its feet to keep the soil cool and moist.
You can start indoor sowing in March. Plant the Astilbe seeds on the surface, pressing them lightly. Make sure the soil stays slightly moist. Once the seedlings reach about 2 inches in height, you can transplant them. Install the plants on the ground towards the end of May. `
Direct sowing can also be started from mid-May.
